With the march of civilization, man is traversing boundaries beyond the limits of imagination. In the spheres of science and technology, the arts and various other fields, man is continuously reaching newer heights. Unfortunately, he has had to pay a heavy price which came as a baggage with such advancement. War, violence, pollution and other things are part of a long list of numerous problems. The baggage, which comes with living such highly intricate and complex lifestyles, has been neatly put in a nutshell by a word that was coined by an endocrinologist Dr. Hans Selye, in the 1930s, and that word is “stress”.
Stress is a common word in our lives today. And, all our daily actions are inevitably marked by stress. This word is used to describe a highly intense level of emotional pressure marked by panic and tension in a critical moment, or for that matter, any situation which is emotionally draining. Also, stress finds various outlets through negative actions such as, in extreme cases, like suicide, self-mutilation, and unpredictability of temperament, verbal and physical abuse and so on. The numbers are rising steadily. We are living in such difficult and demanding times that we accept stress as a part of our daily lives. This long and exhaustive list includes financial problems, personal safety and various other all too common factors of everyday life.
The enterprising creature that man is, it is perhaps not surprising that he has been trying to find a way out to combat the problem of stress. One such ray of hope is anxiety therapy. Anxiety therapy comprises relaxation techniques including meditation, to combat stress. Hypno-therapy is often used to combat stress-related issues using a combination of both mental and physical relaxation to calm the subject’s mind. Another attribute of anxiety therapy is also Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT. This therapy uses three methods to help a patient suffering from stress related problems, using cognitive, behavioral and emotional methods. That is, through the thinking patterns, his/her daily actions and by channelizing one’s emotions in positive ways.
In today’s world, when even kids are prone to from depression related issues due to matters like academic performance, peer pressure, among the other troubles that plague our childhoods. Teen suicides are on the rise, as disillusioned youngsters look find an easy way out of everything. There are so many expectations from different directions that often people are forced to multitask. When this becomes a burden it leads to emotional claustrophobia and stress.
Psychologists are counseling thousands of people in need of anxiety therapy. Also, anxiety therapy includes hypnosis, physical exercises, massage sessions, standard medication including anxiolytics. ACT or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is another method used in anxiety therapy.
